So this weekend my best friend and I went to a poetry workshop that was lead by Turiya Autry, the author of Roots, Reality & Rhyme. It was a lot of fun! Before hand, I hadn't really known who Turiya was, but I got to know her a little at the workshop, and I actually really admire her as a writer. She gave a lot of helpful feedback on our writing that we read to her and she gave us some really helpful tips. I was really inspired by what she had said to us about how she viewed poetry. She explained how she views poetry as everything we do in life, whether it be like drawing or cooking, that it's all poetry in some type of way. I really enjoyed the workshop itself as well. If you ever get the chance to go to some sort of writing workshop, I would recommend taking the opportunity! It might seem a little intimidating since you're sharing you writing with a |
bunch of strangers, especially if you're extremely shy about sharing your writing aloud like I am. If that's the case then I suggest taking a close friend like I did. It's a really great chance to get useful feedback and advice and it's also pretty fun.
After the workshop there was an open mic for people to share their writing. I actually ended up reading a poem I had been working on, which really surprised me! I'm really shy about reading my writing out loud to others, but I'm really glad I did it. I really enjoyed the poetry that others there had shared and after the whole thing I felt really inspired! Turiya even performed a poem from her book at the end of the open mic. I would defiantly recommend reading her work!
